What you’ll do

Distribution Asset Planning has a challenging and exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual with demonstrated communication, leadership, and cross functional relationship building skills to join an established but growing team of Asset Sustainment Engineers at BC Hydro's Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC. The successful candidate will have the skills to develop and execute strategies and programs to manage short- and long term sustainment of critical distribution civil assets. This position will contribute to the “Plan” function of BC Hydro’s Plan – Build – Operate – Support business model. We are looking for a candidate to fill the role at the Senior Structural Engineer level. Candidates with lesser experience will be considered for a more junior role on the team.

  • Develops asset strategies and plans to effectively manage distribution civil assets.
  • Initiates special programs for inspection, maintenance and / or replacement of civil infrastructure and related materials.
  • Works with internal and external stakeholders, materials experts, Delivery, Engineering, Design and Operations resources to assess asset condition, manage asset safety and reliability risks, and optimize asset life.
  • Reviews inspection results and works with delivery partners to ensure assets are repaired, maintained or replaced in a timely manner.
  • Updates and develops Distribution Civil Maintenance Standards and Bulletins; seeks input and approvals to meet asset needs and address hazardous conditions.
  • Leads and / or conducts investigations into asset and component failures and collaborates on corrective measures and design solutions.
  • Collaborates with test labs and Engineering on testing materials and civil components; aligns with latest industry practice and standards.
  • Ensures compliance with WorkSafeBC, Environment Canada, and other regulatory requirements with Corporate Safety and Corporate Environment teams.
  • Improves information systems to track assets and hazardous conditions; maintains up-to-date inventories for crews and asset access.
  • Investigates climate-related risks and develops programs to mitigate such risks.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering specializing in structural engineering recognized by Canadian Universities.
  • Must be registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with the Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. (EGBC).
  • Eight (8) years minimum experience as a structural engineer; preference for experience in the electric utilities sector (Distribution), with underground infrastructure or concrete design. Candidates with lesser experience may be considered at a lower level.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communications skills; ability to present to technical and non-technical audiences and liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of BC Hydro systems, policies and procedures related to power system planning and asset sustainment.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the department.
  • Proactive, collaborative, and results-driven with strong cost-awareness and project administration abilities.
  • Ability to analyze and solve challenging engineering problems with independence, considering costs, operability, and safety.
  • Familiarity with WorkSafeBC requirements and regulations.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally by motor vehicle, watercraft, and aircraft.
  • Registration with EGBC in good standing and a valid driver’s license (Class 5) in good standing.

A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain the following requirements in good standing :

  • Driver's License Type = Class 5
  • EGBC : Engineers & Geoscientists BC = In Good Standing
  • P.Eng. : Professional Engineer = In Good Standing
