Community Transportation Strategy Director
At HDR, we are passionate about creating safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation systems that enhance communities. The Community Transportation Strategy Director leads HDR’s growing practice of community-focused solutions across the transportation market sectors.
Primary Responsibilities
- Grow HDR’s global Community Transportation Strategy practice, expanding technical excellence and client visibility.
- Partner with business leaders to coordinate initiative activities and achieve enterprise-wide goals.
- Engage with current and prospective clients to deepen market penetration, identify growth strategies, and pursue key project opportunities.
- Represent HDR at industry events, committees, conferences, and in published equity topics.
- Collaborate with advisory services teams and market sector leaders to develop innovative tools and methods for clients.
- Lead program activities: policies, project-level outcomes, community-informed decision‑making, compliance, benefits and workforce development planning.
- Manage a database of HDR resources, track market trends, and coordinate cross‑business group efforts.
- Develop annual strategic plans and best‑practice documents.
- Serve as technical focal point for community‑centered solutions, overseeing quality oversight, audits, best‑practice development, and program/project management.
Marketing & Business Development
- Support all transportation market sector directors with community‑focused initiatives and strategic visions.
- Identify and capture major pursuit opportunities, support proposal preparation, presentations, and negotiations.
- Act as conduit between project and pursuit needs, community elements, and HDR resources.
Technical Staff Development & Alignment
- Lead subject‑matter expert initiatives on community‑centered strategy.
- Build and deliver HDR educational programs, internal presentations, webinars, and mentorship opportunities.
- Coordinate staffing recruitment, retention, and skill‑gap development.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in planning, engineering, economics, marketing, communications, sustainability, or related field.
- 15+ years in Architecture & Engineering industry.
- Experience developing and managing client relationships and programs.
- Industry leadership in associations and market visibility.
- Ability to work cooperatively with managers, directors, and staff.
- Proven recruitment, staff leadership, and mentoring experience.
- Commitment to HDR values and employee‑owned culture.
- Understanding of HDR’s Business Classes, Cross Sectors, Market Sectors, and Business Groups.
- Knowledge of HDR’s ID&E initiatives and responsibility report process.
- Master’s degree in a related field (preferred).
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field.
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in related field.
- Professional or Engineering registration with related technical experience.
- Experience developing and managing diverse teams.
- Collaborative work with business class directors, operations managers, technical directors, and marketing managers.
- Commitment to quality, improvement and HDR values.
- Active participation in employee‑owned culture.

Expected range varies by location:
- California: $199,738 – $297,662
- Colorado: $172,501 – $242,539
- Illinois: $181,580 – $242,539
- Maryland: $190,659 – $231,515
- Massachusetts: $217,896 – $264,588
- Minnesota: $198,441 – $231,515
- Nevada: $181,580 – $220,490
- New Jersey: $208,817 – $275,613
- New York: $181,580 – $275,613
- Ohio: $181,580 – $220,490
- Washington D.C.: $217,896 – $264,588
- Washington State: $172,501 – $264,588
- British Columbia: $219,604 – $266,662
