Overview
Our client, a leading Canadian bank with strong commercial and corporate lending platforms and a distinctive market vision, is seeking a Director, Syndicated Financing to join its Montreal team. The successful candidate will help drive the growth of the Bank’s syndicated portfolio by sourcing and recommending high-quality senior debt transactions in line with the bank’s credit policies and risk appetite. This role will have a broad mandate to cultivate and manage key relationships with borrowers, co-lenders, and market influencers and lead due diligence and underwriting activities, ensuring disciplined credit analysis and execution.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned corporate or upper mid-market lender with deep structuring expertise, end-to-end transaction execution experience, and established relationships with external lenders and investors. This is an exciting opportunity to take a leadership role within a high-performing syndications team at a respected and growing financial institution.
Role Responsibilities
- Proactively identify and develop new syndication opportunities in cash flow transactions, asset-based lending, and other senior debt financing structures across a variety of diversified industries.
- Plan and conduct activities that promote the group’s capabilities.
- Conduct proper investigation and due diligence activities for complex loan proposals, including completing relevant analysis and credit documentation while ensuring the risk profile is within the parameters of accepted credit practices.
- Address issues such as compliance or material changes that arise as deals are being negotiated, structured and documented.
- Manage the assigned credit portfolio of syndication accounts, identifying and escalating any material risk issues to ensure the risk rating remains accurate at all times.
- Proactively build a key influencer network of charter bank representatives, lawyers, and other influencers to help the Bank achieve its objectives and foster deal sharing opportunities.
- Keep abreast of general issues affecting the syndication ecosystem, including market conditions, industry practices and financial results for existing and potential clients.
Desired Qualifications
- More than 7 years of relevant experience in a lending or banking environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce or Finance.
- MBA, CPA and/or CFA designation and/or relevant professional designation is an asset.
- Strong relationships with lenders, investors or syndicate partners.
- Strong underwriting, mediation and communication skills to relay messages across departments and ability to manage interactions with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team to meet deadlines, be highly organized and proactive.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, in both official languages (French and English) is required.
Please note that at present, legal eligibility to work in Canada is a prerequisite for this role.
