Job Description

Overview

Journeyperson Steamfitter at the University of Saskatchewan. Primary Purpose: To maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install steam, condensate, chilled water, heating, and related distribution systems in support of safe and reliable campus operations.

Nature of Work

Reporting to an Assistant Manager, Facilities, this role works in a multi-trade environment, indoors and outdoors, under varied conditions. The work involves moderate to heavy physical labour, use of ladders and lifts, and tasks in confined spaces, crawlspaces, and construction zones. Hazards may include asbestos, lead, silica, volatile organic compounds, and other regulated materials. Full compliance with safety procedures and personal protective equipment (including respiratory protection) is mandatory. This position participates in a rotational on-call schedule and may have shift changes based on operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Is accountable to the Facilities Team Charter and aligned with the purpose, vision, and values, and holds themselves and each other accountable to it
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, modify, and test a wide range of steam, condensate, chilled water, and related piping systems and components in institutional, research, and utility settings
  • Inspect, diagnose, and service valves, pumps, heat exchangers, traps, and ancillary equipment associated with heating and cooling systems
  • Perform work in accordance with all applicable codes, regulations, and University of Saskatchewan standards
  • Contribute to a long-term strategy of reliability-centered maintenance by identifying trends and proactive solutions
  • Work collaboratively with other trades and staff to carry out preventive and predictive maintenance activities
  • Provide input and recommendations for equipment upgrades, system improvements, and procedural innovations
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, schematics, and specifications to determine work scope and plan/estimate work
  • Assist with planning and execution of shop and field work to ensure clean, safe, and efficient maintenance and installations
  • Communicate clearly with team members and the campus community to coordinate tasks, arrange procurement of materials, and deliver customer service
  • Support workplace safety initiatives and continuously seek to improve work practices and performance
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Valid Red Seal Journeyperson Certificate in Steamfitting as recognized by the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience as a Journeyperson Steamfitter in industrial, commercial, or institutional settings
  • Familiarity with computerized work management systems; training or experience in preventative and predictive maintenance is an asset
  • Must hold and maintain a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
  • Successful criminal record check is required

Skills

  • Strong troubleshooting, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and digital plans
  • Competency with computers and common applications (e.g., Microsoft Office, email), with the ability to learn maintenance software
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools relevant to the steamfitter trade
